By Bruce KiVo

We know there’s mucho excitement comin’ into UFC 140 this Sat night, but the MMA Community

is still in awe as to what happened to Mayhem Miller in his fight with Michael Bisping. According to

Dana White, Miller was breathing heavy during his entrance to the cage and hinted the pressure of

returning to the UFC could have gotten to him. Dana has hinted at cutting Mayhem from the UFC. I

say not so fast. Nerves alone can zap a fighter’s cardio as well as going all out at the beginning of a

fight. I do agree with Dana. It looked like Miller’s first fight. We’ve seen Mayhem Miller tap out the great

Sakuraba and almost beat Jake Shieds. Even when he lost to GSP, cardio was never a problem.

UFC on Fox 2 looking real good. Phil “Mr Wonderful” Davis vs Rashad and Bad Boy Chael Sonnen faces

Mark Munoz with another fight to be added. Rashad went a little too far during pre fight trash talk. React-

ing to Rashad saying he’s gonna ko Phil Davis, Phil’s response was “According to Jon Jones, you have

no chin”. Rashad totally went off on Davis and his final words to Mr Wonderful being ” Gonna put my

hands on you worse then that coach did to those kids @ Penn State”. Davis, by the way wrestled for

Penn. Bad Boy Chael kept it more friendly, saying about his friend Munoz, Mark’s a really good wrestler,

but I’m a fighter. As to #1 contender for Jon Jones belt, Dana says it’s still Rashad.

According to Nick Diaz, Carlos Condit is a better matchup for him then GSP. “Carlos comes to fight”.

Condit says,”First Diaz, then St Pierre”.Georges, by the way claims to have Diaz all figured out. One

thing for sure….Carlos Condit and Nick Diaz gonna bring it @ UFC 143 for the UFC Interim Welterweight

Title. Do not blink! Both guys still looking to fight the current Undisputed UFC Welterweight Champ,

Georges St Pierre. who is unfortunately on the injured list for the next 10 months.

Good news. Strikeforce not going anywhere for now. They return to Showtime Jan 7th. On the card so far

is AKA star and Strikeforce Middleweight Champion Luke Rockhold defending his title against the ever

dangerous Team Jackson and former UFC fighter fighter Keith Jardine. King Mo and Robbie Lawler are also

on the card. Big congrats to Tuf 14 winners John Dodson and Diego Brandao. They both look to be future

UFC stars. If Dodson drops down in weight for the new 125 division, he’s got potential to be a champ. Diego

rocked the house with his white belt armbar from the guard. Yes!!

Until Next Time. See You At The Fights!

By Bruce KiVo Nobody picking Lyoto Machida to beat Jonny “Bones” Jones @ UFC 140 Sat night. Can’t blame em....

By Bruce KiVo

Nobody picking Lyoto Machida to beat Jonny “Bones” Jones @ UFC 140 Sat night. Can’t blame em.

Jones may be the best 205er ever… great wrestling, reach and ninjalike striking .

Machida is certainly one of the best ever, but the reach advantage of Jones will be too much.

Lookin’ forward to a healed Little Nog vs Tito Ortiz. Tito training with Fabricio Werdum for this fight

and has nothing but respect for The Noguiera Brothers.

“Big Nog” Minotauro Noguiera vs Frank Mir! Doesn’t get better then this. And don’t forget TheKorean

Zombie vs Mark Hominick yeah baby! UFC 140 in Toronto Sat Dec 10th can’t be missed.

According to Dana, Frankie “The Answer” Edgar set to fight Ben Henderson in Japan in Feb 2012.

Michael “The Count” Bisping looking real focused in his one-sided beatdown of Mayhem Miller.

Though Miller looked ok in r1, he was totally gassed coming into r2. Have never seen Mayhem

perform so poorly. Not taking anything away from “The Count”, but it looked as though Miller

had a huge adrenilin rush, forgot to breathe and gassed. It happens. The underrated Bisping is

most def a force to be reckoned with and has never been submitted. Love him or hate him, he’s

a big draw for UFC fans and considered so valuable that he recieved $425,000 for his win over

Miller ($250g to show and a $175g win bonus). Most fighters on the Ultimate Fighter Finale card

recieved $8,000 to show and an $8,000 win bonus. Bisping alone can fill any arena in the UK.

He pocketed more dinero then Hendo, Rua, Velasquez, Dos Santos, Cung and Wand for their recent fights.

Does this mean he’ll get a shot at Anderson Silva’s title before Chael or Hendo get their rematches??

Speaking of “The Spider”, Dan Henderson claims Silva has been faking injuries to avoid fighting him

and Chael. Dan was one of the first to expose Anderson’s weakness against wrestlers. We also saw it when

Chael dominated Silva for 4 rounds. Hendo claims Silva will conveniently be recovered if Dana White

offers him a fight with Michael Bisping. Bisping, by the way picks Chael to beat

Mark Munoz. Mark says Chael Sonnen is a real nice guy and marketing genius. They wrestled together in college

Top earner at UFC 139 was none other then former Strikeforce Champ and movie star Cung Le. Cung

earned $350,000 as opposed to Wanderlei Silva’s $200,000. Cung has been making movies and ig-

nored his fighting for a couple of years. Making movies with gorgeous Lucy Liu, Van Damn, Channing

Tatum etc is great, but it won’t help in the cage. Cung will be back if he chooses to do so. If he comes back

he’ll need to be crisp with his skills as when he stopped Scott Smith in their 2nd fight or when he broke

Frank Shamrock’s arm to win the Strikeforce World Championship.

Former Pride Champ, Wanderlei Silva, AKA “The Axe Murderer” was undefeated for 5 years in Pride.

After a few defeats in the UFC by KO everyone thought he was done. He did a smart thing which fighters need

to do sometimes…..he changed his style. Working with coach Rafael Cordeiro. Wand changed his style for

the Cung fight and it worked. If he came in the way he normally does, Cung may have won the fight. Wand

maybe has learned with today’s caliber of fighters “U gotta protect yourself at all times”. We saw it when

Chuck got KO’d by Rashad.

Former UFC Heavyweight Champ Dan “The Beast” Severn to end his fighting

career in 2012. Already in his 50′s with over 100 pro fights,

Dan will concentrate on family and coaching.

The Beast is one funny dude and had everyone cracking up when he gave an

MMA seminar @ Natan Gadish’s Krav Maga Academy 2 months ago.

Dig this Josh Koschek of AKA is gonna fight Carlos Condit Superbowl

Weekend. Condit brings it and deserves a title shot if he defeats Josh. Josh has

been asking for this matchup for a while.

The last UCL was off the hook, with Garcia GungFu Standout Jonathon Figueroa

displaying ninjalike skills in the cage. Eric Bausch and Jon “The Hitman” Padron

rocked the house with non-stop action. Peter Storm’s UCL always delivers.

This One Armed Fighter, Notorious Nick Newell, with a great submission win over Denis Hernandez at XFC.

This dude’s got an amazing skillset and knows how to win. He fights with half a

left arm and doesn’t complain. He is now 6-0 in MMA.

Ultimate Fighter star Akira awaits upcoming UFC fight and heads home to

Sweden for family visit. Will he eat too many Swedish meatballs and have to

cut weight when he returns?

Congrats to MMA fighter Carlos Cline on the birth of his son CJ (Carlos Jr.).

Carlos going back into training @ Renzos with sparring partners Kevin Wall and

Anton Johnson.

Former Bellator LW Champ and number 5 LW in the world Eddie

Alvarez lost his belt by by rear naked in r4 to

new Bellator Champ Michael Chandler. Chandler survived a real beatdown by Eddie in r3, but won in r4.

Anybody can go and anybody can get caught.

As Renzo says “MMA is a surprise Box. You never know what can happen” .

See you at the fights!

By Chuck Mindenhall (Espn.com)

In a very literal underground setting in lower Manhattan, a room of men are being selected at random to fight one another. These men are co-mingling with people there to watch them fight. It’s an unnervingly casual intersection. Everybody’s in socks to protect the mats, the participants have their hands wrapped, the spectators hold small plates with hors d’oeuvres. It’s a mix of gladiator stereotype and bemused hipster curiosity that have all come together to partake in something that’s perfectly legal just about everywhere else well above ground — a mixed martial arts card.

This all adds up to something unusual.

The names are drawn and the fighters square off for a brief moment to almost nobody’s attention. They come from area gyms around New York City — Brooklyn Combat Club, Tiger Schullman’s, Steve Katz’s school in Queens. There are guys you’ve never heard of, guys who do it for experience, to catapult to bigger things, to test their mettle, to rid themselves of wild hairs — it could be anything. Frankie Edgar got his start in these shows. Ditto Lyman Good, and “The Ultimate Fighter” Season 14’s green-haired bantamweight Louis Gaudinot. There are lores all over, traveling up and down the halls.

Most of these guys are in great shape and fight-ready. Some of them are just adrenaline junkies. Whatever their reason for showing up, it has nothing to do with money, as they aren’t paid. Their reasoning is hard to pinpoint, and it all goes into the mysterious vibe of the show. In fact, it’s the crux of a book just released by Jim Genia called Raw Combat, which is all about this underground fight scene and its periphery, treating its old school poetries and absurdities as equals.

And it’s a privy thing to see these guys scrap under naked bulbs in whichever of the five boroughs a card is held in. To hear about an upcoming “event,” you have to be on organizer Peter Storm’s list. The easiest way to find out about a sub rosa fight card on his Underground Combat League (UCL) circuit is to receive a text from Storm with time and location. That’s it — a text with cryptic details. The cards bounce around from place to place to avoid being snuffed out by the police. There’s no medical provision should anybody be seriously hurt, no drug testing, none of the sanctiony up-and-up. It’s come as you will, leave as you turn out.

Many times, there isn’t a ring or a cage, so the spectators form a sort of human phalanx to keep the fights enclosed. At most shows, there are maybe 100 people on hand to view it, and the bulk of them are men. When there’s a shortage of fights or an odd number, sometimes they’ll ask for volunteers from the audience who meet the weight specifications. A few hands are always raised.

Yet contrary to cinematic depiction, there aren’t any fat men with fans of cash taking action. Though it’s a traditional smokers show, there isn’t any smoke. At this card, no alcohol either.

You might find some of those components at a regular underground fight, but this one is actually more of a medley show, to coincide with the release of Genia’s book. Genia has spent a lot of time watching fights in subterranean set-ups, and his book digs into the niche within the niche. It takes a closer look at the characters, some of whom are on tonight’s card. He is on hand to celebrate its release along with author Matthew Polly, who also has an MMA book set to release called Tapped Out, which is more of a George Plimpton-esque participatory account of an everyman training for a fight.

Along with authors in the room, there are agents and publicists. Georges St. Pierre’s Muay Thai trainer, Phil Nurse, is on hand for Polly, as is submission coach John Danaher, and Joey Varner, Gray Maynard’s striking coach from Las Vegas — a central figure in Polly’s book.

In other words, this is the essence of underground fighting parlayed with a PR event.

As ceremony dictates, there won’t be any vale tudo bouts — the infamous “anything goes” fights that are agreed upon by handshakes if guys are willing — but there assurances of blood. On this night they’ll do all four fights under the unified rules, which took shape a decade ago in nearby New Jersey, just across the river where all of this sneaking around must seem pretty amusing. The UCL fighters will compete in a miniature cage in an adjoining room, so small that angles won’t be cut by choice.
Storm, with his ball cap pulled down close to his eyes, takes the center of it and announces the first fight is about to start, and the herd moves in closer to the cage to hear the thuds over the hum of the ventilation unit above.

It’s a secret society affair built in part on its illicit appeal. There’s more in play here than just nose-snubbing the authorities and showcasing unheralded talent. There’s a Chuck Palahniuk “Fight Club” promise of raw violence. And as fascinating as it might seem, as much as it can be fun to look over your shoulder to see if you’re getting by with a fast one, it makes so little sense.

The fight card is held on Nov. 5. In exactly one week, the UFC debuts on national broadcast television — UFC on FOX from Anaheim, Calif. — in what is MMA’s first big leap toward graduating a scrutinized niche sport to a broadly accepted one.

In the two coastal epicenters, MMA is splitting legitimacy right down the middle.

Though everybody has televisions and the freedom to flip channels as they wish, MMA is still a Dark Ages game on Empire State soil, and it’s forced to act that way. Taken piecemeal, all the facets of MMA are legal — kickboxing, jiu-jitsu, wrestling and boxing. Put together, it adds up to something brutal for political tastes. Forget that Madison Square Garden was intended for combat sports; in 2011 it’s still a non-sanctioned spectacle where it sits. Crude shows like Peter Storm’s exist to fill a demand — in fact, they exist almost wholly in spite. On several occasions, Storm thanks the crowd and encourages everyone to keep up the good fight in getting MMA legalized in New York. As much as he’s the face of the underground, he talks like somebody who wants to put underground fights out of business.

And it’s been the bane of Zuffa’s existence for the past few years, getting New York to sanction MMA. Lorenzo Fertitta and Dana White have spent millions of dollars to essentially debunk antique notions of what the sport is about. Though progress gets made each year, MMA hasn’t been placed on the Ways and Means Committee agenda in 2011. Once again, it’s back to the old drawing board. There’s always 2012. And 2013. And so on.

But the UFC can’t wait around. It will take the next step for MMA’s growth with a free heavyweight title bout between Junior dos Santos and champion Cain Velasquez on national television, making New York itself look like something from the Dark Ages. State assemblyman Bob Reilly is the staunchest opponent of sanctioning MMA, and he cites moral reasons and principles as to why. For people who have tried to follow his objections, it seems like old-fashioned ignorance — principles can be tolerated, but not if they’re built on stubbornness. The problems are far more convoluted than that, but Reilly and MMA lobbyists are still sitting there glaring at each other righteously as time passes.

And that’s where we are between seven days and two worlds.

On Saturday, the UFC show will very likely best the highest television ratings in MMA history, which was Kimbo Slice versus Josh Thompson (6.5 million) a Strikeforce event on CBS. The UFC will roll out Velasquez and dos Santos as a red carpet event to serve as a showcase not only of its brand but of the sport. People in New York can watch on television just like anybody else.

Want to talk about a million miles away though? To see a fight live in New York, a text might have to point you in the direction of a Chinese restaurant in the Bronx, down a flight of stairs and away from the probing eyes of the NYPD.

The Raw Combat fights go off as you might expect — some technical moments, some sloppiness, plenty of haymakers.

The first fight pits a lanky guy named Jonathan Velez, against a fighter who uses an alias, Jon Tex. The referee, a Brooklyn-based fighter named Jason “Rage” Rivas in ordinary street clothes, brings them together with a sound bite tailor-made for the underground theater: “Are you ready? Are you ready? F— each other up!” Each fight is three, three-minute rounds. They begin swinging in the relative quiet of the gym, and each time one lands it sounds like a salmon being smacked against a brick wall. It’s the small room acoustics. Velez ends up winning it.

Eric Blasich of Franklin Square, who is built like Eddie Alvarez, fights Jon Padron to a draw. At one point during that fight, the experienced observer Varner sees a sweep materializing but Padron grabs the fence a couple of times to prevent it. This is where the differences stack up. Little things like grabbing the fence go unnoticed. One of the stars of Genia’s book, Kirkland Campbell, loses a rematch to Jonathan Rodriguez the same way he lost the first — via a triangle choke. And in the main event, heavyweights Israel Martinez and Junior Lubin square off and go back and forth for the three minutes. Martinez can’t answer the second round bell.

“He said he couldn’t breathe,” said referee Rivas. “It might be asthma; I don’t know. I tried to ignore him when I first heard him say he couldn’t keep going, but he insisted to his corner.”

Storm says hold tight — Lubin is still fresh and ready to go again. He calls up the UCL champion James Braddock, who’s somewhere gallivanting in the New York City night, to see if he might come down and fight. Braddock beat Storm for the belt not so long before (Storm usually fights on his own cards), but it’s give and take. Everybody waits around to see if the bonus fight will materialize. It doesn’t. Braddock is an hour away and can’t make it, so that’s a wrap. People applaud the action that was provided anyway. They take the action where they can find it, even if it’s thrown together spur of the moment in undisclosed locations away from the public eye. Even if as far as public knowledge goes, it never happened.

A defeated Kirkland Campbell walks over and shakes his head. He lost to the same guy again, by submission again. Then he says, “Man, when this thing happens, I just want to fight in Madison Square Garden.” This sounds far-fetched from a guy losing on the underground circuit, but it’s not the most far-fetched thing in the sentence.

Madison Square Garden is upstairs, protected from any legitimate happenings in the sport he’s in.

EUGENE, Ore. — A Eugene mixed martial arts fighter is the talk of the world right now, but not for his fight on the mat.

Brent Alvarez was attending an MMA competition in Los Angeles this weekend when he stopped an armed robbery.

Alvarez and his student were walking into a hotel lobby when they heard the clerk yell for help.

They used their MMA skills to subdue the armed robber and hold him until police got there.

Surveillance footage shows the alleged armed robber walking into the hotel.

He then goes behind the desk and flashes his gun at the clerk.

Minutes later Alvarez and his student walked into the lobby, and that’s when the clerk yells for help.

The two struggled with the suspect, first trying to keep him from pulling his handgun out.

The three continued to fight until Alvarez flipped the suspect over and put him in a chokehold and body lock.

Since then, Alvarez says media from all around the country — and as far away as Italy — have picked up the story.

The altercation even made the front page of Yahoo and has taken off on YouTube.

“I just reacted to the gun. I saw the threat and tried to eliminate it. I never thought anything would become of the situation,” Alvarez said.

“We were just helping the guy out, and sure it was a life and death situation, especially after it happened thinking about that,” said MMA fighter Billy Denney.

Alvarez says he didn’t hit the suspect because at the time he didn’t feel physically threatened.

Alvarez says LAPD thanked him and his student for their brave work.

Meanwhile, the hotel clerk knocked a few dollars off their bill.

Smokin’ Joe Frazier, as he was known to his many fans was the first boxer to beat Muhammed Ali.

It was his famous left hook in the 15th round that knocked the previously unbeatable Ali down and

sealed the fight for Frazier. The former HW Champion of the World was called Smokin’ Joe because he

always brought it… a relentless cardio machine who pushed the pace and always came at you like a

freight train. He fought everyone the same way. Standing 5’10, Joe was a small heavyweight. In your face,

his head on your shoulder, closing the distance and delivering deadly head and bodyshots…you’d hav to kill him

to stop him. There was no lay and pray with this boxing icon.

Revered by the Boxing world, fans and athletes of all sports including Mixed Martial Artists, Smokin’Joe Frazier will

always be remembered in a good way.

Who can forget “The Thrilla In Manila” where he fought Ali almost to the death?… and Howard Cosell spouted ” Down

Goes Frazier”. Well former World Heavyweight Champ Joe Frazier is down for good, but will never be forgotten.

George Foreman, Lennox Lewis, Don King, Floyd Mayweather and so many others including his nemesis Muhammed Ali

remember Smokin’ Joe Frazier as one of the greatest boxers ever and the guy who tried to change people’s lives for the

better. Joe passed yesterday in Philadelphia.

RIP Smokin’ Joe.

by Bruce KiVo

Mark Munoz certainly lived up to his nickname, The Filipino Wrecking Machine yesterday

@ UFC 138 disposing of Chris “The Crippler” Leben by TKO end of r2. Munoz, a national wresling

champ came into the cage oozing confidence and all smiles. Leben entered pacing, serious and

ready to get down to business. Although it was a back and forth fight, Mark’s world class wrestling

combined with his heavy hands did Leben in. By the end of the 2nd round, “The Crippler” could

not see out of his left eye and his corner was forced to throw in the towel. Chris is a warrior with a

steel jaw who fought a great fight. This was the biggest win for Munoz and brings him one step closer

to a title shot.

Dana White has been keeping his promise to the fans by bringing in great fight cards:

November 19th, UFC 139 is no joke…We have Dan Henderson vs Mauricio Shogun Rua as the main

event and co headlining is non other then movie star Cung Le vs Wanderlai “The Axe Murderer” Silva.

Hendo is a former 2 division Pride Champ and former Strikeforce Champ. Shogun is a former Pride

and UFC Champion. Both guys are extremely dangerous and are at their best. . Although both guys

fought in Pride, they never faced off in the ring. Do not expect this fightto go the distance.

Former Strikeforce MW Champ Cung Le, who’s starring in soon to be released Dragon Eyes with Jean

Claude Van Dam looks to get closer to a UFC title shot by defeating Wanderlei. Cung has both wrestling

and striking. P4p he’s second to none. and some say he can beat Anderson Silva. Although Wanderlei, the

former PrideChamp is dangerous, Cung should score a KO in Round 1. and maybe get a chance at the

coveted UFC BELT.

Uriah Faber vs Brian Bowles, Kampmann vs Rick Story, Nick Pace vs Miguel Torres and a lot of other

exciting fights are planned for UFC 139.

Let the games begin!
